What are star words?

Star words are centering words, received in some way on Epiphany, meant to guide your prayers, reflections, or spiritual practices for the new year. The idea is that as the magi followed a star, we can consider being led by a focusing sentiment. A few examples of star words are hope, action, beauty, and calm.

Receiving star words has become a popular practice in mainline churches, and Living Table has enjoyed iterations of the ritual for the past several years. For 2023, we have made star words in the form of decals. These are intended to be applied to a glass surface such as a mirror. (We put ours on our bathroom mirror.) The vinyl is not permanent, meaning it will stay up if you leave it alone, and you can remove it later when you wish.

How do I apply my vinyl decal?

1/6
1/6 Take your star word in hand.
2/6
2/6 Peel the backing away from the decal.
3/6
3/6 Place the decal onto a clean mirror or glass surface.
4/6
4/6 Optionally, press down on the decal with a card such as an ID card to smooth out the decal.
5/6
5/6 Gently peel back the transfer tape leaving the decal on the mirror or glass surface.
6/6
6/6 That is all – smooth out and enjoy your decal.

Comment on this post if you are attending January 8th via Zoom or not at all and would like us to get a star word to you. Be sure your directory address is current (do not put your address in a comment).

  1. I’d like a star word, but I can’t begin to get centered enough–settled down enough–these days to think about what I’d like it to be. (Of course I realize that may give a lot of hints rignt there.)

    • In this week’s pastoral note, I think the pastor is asking for ideas about a specific word for the community for 2023. But for us as individuals we just receive one star word this Sunday (whatever it is – each word is different, but they are not assigned to us nor chosen for us).
