The Circle Coming to New Branches!
The Land Acknowledgment and Beyond Group is excited to announce that The Circle, one of our nation’s oldest independent Native American newspapers, will soon be available to members of New Branches! The three congregations have pooled resources to purchase a one-year bulk subscription of 50 papers per month. The first issues are expected to arrive in March!
We plan to keep 3-5 copies of the paper in the New Branches Library. The remaining copies will be made available – in the Commons area – for New Branches members to take home, read, and pass along to others.
While The Circle is available at a number of Twin Cities “drop spots” without charge, we have paid for a bulk subscription because of our commitment to a) compensate Native Americans for their work, b) support Native businesses in our community, and c) help New Branches members to broaden their knowledge and understanding of Native American arts, culture, and newsworthy happenings.
About The Circle
This nonprofit newspaper describes itself as providing news from a Native American perspective. It has served the Native American community for 44 years. Articles discuss everything from politics and other news involving Native Americans in Minnesota, to sports and arts community announcements. Each issue includes a monthly Community Events Calendar and opinion pieces.
The Land Acknowledgment & Beyond Group
We meet on the first Tuesday of the month, from 7:00-8:30 PM. We welcome new members and fresh ideas – especially now, as we develop our 2024 Action Plan for living Into Our New Branches Land Acknowledgment! Contact Ann K. (LT) or Sally E. (Spirit) to get on the mailing list and receive the Zoom link.
Book Discussion Group
We also have an ongoing Book Discussion Group in which participants have been learning more about Native American history. The second book, fiction by a Native American author, will begin in April for old and new readers. More information to come.
