The Circle Newspapers in the Commons

Have you read the latest edition of The Circle: Native American News and Arts? Each faith community has contributed to an annual subscription to this wonderful news resource – News reporting from a Native American Perspective, written by Native journalists. The newest edition includes pieces on Building Tribal Energy Sovereignty by Lauren Boritzke Smith and The New Indian Wars: Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher by Winona LaDuke.

Please pick up your copy from the Communications table in the Commons area (under the electronic message board)!

Once you have read it, please pass it on to someone you know and encourage them to do the same!

If you celebrate with us remotely, please let Ann K. know if you’d like a copy sent to you. You can also read the paper online.

Fall Book Discussion Group

We will again meet to discuss An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States – For Young People on Tuesday, November 12 at 7 pm on Zoom.  Sarah M will lead us in a close look at information and themes explored in Chapters 3, 4 and 5.

Please feel welcome to join us – even if you did not make the first meeting! All are welcome.

You can also order a copy directly from Birch Bark Books.

November is National Native American Heritage Month!

The New Branches Library kiosk in the Commons Area will feature Native American authors, leaders and wisdom.

Lake Nokomis Lutheran is sponsoring a Faith and Life Conversation with Brenda Blackhawk titled Colonization and the Church: Truth-telling to Spur Action on Wednesday, November 13 from 5:30 – 6:30 pm in the Large Sanctuary.

Please plan to join us as we learn about the Church’s role in colonization, including the Doctrine of Discovery and Indian Boarding Schools, as well as current efforts toward healing and reconciliation.

Learn more about Brenda Blackhawk (Hocąk).

Stay tuned for news of other events scheduled in and around the Twin Cities … !

Next Land Acknowledgement and Beyond Group Meeting

Since the National Election falls on November 5, and the Book Discussion Group meets on November 12, November’s Land Acknowledgement and Beyond Group Meeting is scheduled for November 19, 2024 at 7 PM.

We will continue to look at ways that the New Branches Community as a whole might live into our Land Acknowledgement. This will be LAB’s only meeting between now and January and we hope that all interested and willing to help shape this critically important phase of our work as a community will join us and share their insights and input!
