Faith & Life Conversion with Brenda Blackhawk (Hocak) -Colonization and the Church: Truth-telling to Spur Action
Brenda Blackhawk (Hocak) is a sister, Auntie, writer, volunteer, educator, and organizer based in Minneapolis, MN. She graduated summa cum laude from Iowa State University, majoring in English and minoring in Technical Communications, Women’s and Gender Studies, and American Indian Studies. Currently, Brenda is the Director of Communications at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis. She sits on the Doctrine of Discovery task Force (ELCA), the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Relatives Task Force (ELCA), the Reparations Work Group of the Minnesota Council of Churches, and the Human Rights Commission of the City of Brooklyn Park. Brenda is frequently contracted to write or lead racial justice or community organizing training for various ELCA publications and groups.

- Here is a list of ways you might consider learning more about our Native siblings, honoring their resilience and ongoing contributions to this place we call Minnesota and celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day Saturday, Oct. 12 to Monday, Oct. 14:
- Read about efforts to replace the Columbus Day holiday with Indigenous Peoples’ Day and why this truth-telling is important.
- Attend Owámni: Falling Water Festival,Saturday, Oct. 12, 1 – 5 p.m.at Mill Ruins Park—a free, family-friendly event to celebrate Indigenous Minnesota culture with music, art, food, and more.
- Go to the Indigenous Peoples’ Day Powwow, Monday, Oct. 14, 5 – 8 p.m.at the new Minneapolis American Indian Center. Grand entry is at 5 p.m. Let Kat V. or Gloria K. know if you’d like to join them.
- Take a closer look at Four Seasons—The Four Sisters, ledger art by Joanne Brings Thunder (Eastern Shoshone) on display in The Commons.
- Read or start reading a book by an Indigenous author or about Indigenous history:

About Rachael Keefe
Rev. Dr. Rachael Keefe is the pastor of Living Table United Church of Christ. She was called to Living Table in 2015 after serving in many varied ministry settings since her ordination in 1992. She holds graduate degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary and Andover Newton Seminary at Yale (formerly Andover Newton Theological School). Her ministry and leadership often center around advocacy and accessibility. Her writing has been published by Chalice Press, The Christian Century, Red Letter Christians, Working Preacher, RevGalBlogPals, and others. She is grateful to be in ministry with Living Table today.
